NEW! State of Play(wright): 2/17-2/23
Wait a second, what do I even do all week?! (A lot, actually!)
This publication is called “A Playwright’s Journey”…so I’ve been thinking— why don’t I let you all in on the details? What does the work-week of an emerging playwright actually look like? Or, rather, what’s one way it can look?
In divulging these details, I hope to bolster and inspire those of you who perhaps feel you aren’t doing enough, aren’t doing the right things, etc. etc. There is no one way to be an artist! Some weeks it might look like I’m an inhuman playwriting machine, and some weeks you may wonder if I’m even still alive. It’s all about balance, right?
So, here’s what I got up to this past week:
Submissions
This past week, I submitted to four different opportunities:
Sewanee Writer’s Conference: submitted my full length historical fiction, PIETA
Ponder Review: submitted a ten minute play called Saturday’s Child
Free State Review, Galileo Press: submitted a one minute play, Ophelia’s Savior
Weathervane Playhouse 8x10 Theatrefest: submitted a ten minute play called Taking the D Train
I spent $30.50 on these submissions (woof).
Projects
Writing wise, I worked on a few different projects, namely:
A commissioned work for a local theater company’s youth club
Previously mentioned ten minute play, Taking the D Train
Previously mentioned one minute play, Ophelia’s Savior
My solo show, The Bisexual 20-Something’s Guide to Divorce
Words Written
Overall, I wrote approximately 2000 words across various projects this week!
Miscellaneous
I am currently acting in a local indie theater festival this week, and so I spent a lot of my free time memorizing lines and going to rehearsals (approximately four hours over the week).
I also serve as the Director of Community Engagement for First Kiss Theatre, and spent approximately four hours working on editing our latest audio theatre release (check out Play-Mates anywhere you get podcasts), sending emails, and going to meetings.
And lastly, of course, I spent about three hours on this SubStack reading plays and writing posts!
What did you get up to this week? Have any cool submission opps, playwriting wins, or exciting new projects to gush about? Let everyone know in the comments!
Happy theatre-making, friends!
~Brynn
