This past week included the birthdays of some of my absolute favorite people— my brother (April 29th), my mom (May 2nd), my high school best friend (also May 2nd), and my niece (May 4th, not my brother’s kid but one of my BFF’s). Needless to say, if you’re a Taurus, I probably love you!
But there has been so much more to celebrate besides all these amazing people. I’ve been getting a lot of very happy emails lately, and I can’t wait to share the news with you all!
Submissions
This week I sent in two submissions:
LAB Theatre Project’s 11th Season (submissions closed April 30th)
And now for the happy email news— I am officially being interviewed for the NYTW 2050 Administrative Fellowship in Education and Engagement! The fact that I even scored an interview in a year where they received a historically large amount of applications absolutely bowls me over.
I also have made it to the Finalist round for the New Roots Residency this coming October! I’ll know by next week’s State of Play(wright) if I have been chosen.
My Wild Imaginings: Epiphanies semifinalist table read was scheduled for next Monday! Hopefully I get a lot out of it and crank out the most fantastic seventh draft anybody has ever seen (lol).
Finally, I been invited to participate in TranScript Productions’ inaugural Technicolor Play Festival! This company produces work by trans and/or nonbinary (me!) playwrights, and the festival will take place virtually. I will post a link for tickets when it becomes available.
Projects
I mostly just worked on my new script mentioned last week, working title Appalachian Gothic. This will be a full length piece and I am about halfway through the first draft.
The first draft is Bad! But that’s okay! The first draft is supposed to be Bad! At least, that’s what I chant to myself as I write it at lightning speed.
Words Written
I wrote about 5700 words this week. Lets just say I try to get through first drafts as fast as possible because Oh God It’s So Bad.
The whole script is 7400 words currently.
Miscellaneous
Due to unanticipated staff changes at First Kiss Theatre, I’ve been running around a little bit crazy. First off, I spent about nine hours editing this past week for both episodes 3 and 4 of wht big teeth you have. Dear god, please listen to it, I’m pretty sure a part of my psyche permanently lives in those four episodes. Then I had to complete some newsletter writing, emails, and research for our Weekly Round-Up.
I attended a private reading of Wolf Mountain Workshop’s newest audio production (the name and details of which are still secret!) which promises to be an edge-of-your-seat horror story that will leave you going, “that was fucked up”. If you like that sort of thing you should probably be listening to their already released series, but definitely watch this space for announcements about this new project! It stars one of my very best friends, so yes, I’m just a tad biased, but I promise it is spine chilling!
Finally, the theatre club I help run is putting on a talent show along with the play I wrote for them! Tech week starts tonight. Send me the best vibes because dear lord, that’s going to be stressful.
That’s it for this week, folks. Let me know in the comments what you’ve been working on, and share any wins you’ve had with the community!
Happy theatre-making!
~Brynn
