Hello all!
Are you a playwright, writer, and/or a theater lover? Then I think you’ll want to stick around.
I’m Brynn, and I’m a playwright and theater artist. It’s well known among us artists (of any kind) that this isn’t the easiest path to follow. If you’re like me, you’ve gotten at least one degree in your art and are doing your best on your own to struggle towards something you could call success.
I’ve been through both an undergrad and graduate program for Theatre and found my true calling as a playwright around 2018. I continued pursuing that in my MFA because I was lucky enough to get into one that was vaguely affordable. But not everybody is so lucky.
As someone who is also passionate about teaching and mentoring, I wanted to bring something to people who maybe can’t afford more school, master classes, or further education. I know what it feels like to scroll through Instagram and see all your theater colleagues seemingly succeeding faster and more than you. My solution was to get as many books and plays into my brain as possible in the hopes of continuing my playwriting education as I continued writing. And now, I want to bring that to more people.
What you’ll find in this Substack are weekly reviews of plays that you can download (at the time of writing) on New Play Exchange, which is only $1/month. You heard that right— only $1! The reviews will not only tell you what I thought of the play, but what I think we can learn from it as fellow playwrights. These reviews are released every Tuesday at 12:30 pm EST.
You’ll also find monthly book reviews released on the last day of every month at 12:30 pm EST. These reviews will evaluate different writing, playwriting, and/or theater books to see if they’re helpful for playwrights. I’ll review the book from the perspective of an emerging playwright trying to learn more about their craft so that you know if it’s one you should pick up!

Let’s become better playwrights together.
